Bensbach Fly Week 2027
Papua New Guinea
Nine fly anglers. One week on the greatest barramundi river on Earth. Bring the fly rod and crack the metre.
"I would argue there is no better place to fish on Earth!"
Bensbach angler Craig. M - 2023

For one week in August 2027, we're running Bensbach as a dedicated fly-fishing departure — nine like-minded fly anglers, one remote lodge, and a river that holds more metre-plus barramundi than anywhere on the planet. While most barra charters would be thrilled with ten fish over a metre in a season, Bensbach guests routinely beat that in a week. Swap the bait caster for a fly rod and you've got a genuine shot at the barra of a lifetime on fly.

The scenery is like nowhere else in PNG. Move through densely forested lowlands and a bend in the river opens onto rolling parkland — empty, green and infinite. Thousands of rusa deer graze the plains alongside wild pigs, wallabies and goannas, and the birdlife is extraordinary: jabiru storks riding the thermals, dancing brolgas, herons, magpie geese and more. The Bensbach Wilderness Lodge, owned and operated by Trans Niugini Tours, sits under 100km inland from the river mouth — a comfortable, well-equipped base you fish from by boat at an easy pace.

Built entirely from local materials, the lodge blends into its surroundings and sleeps sixteen (we keep it to nine). Rooms are basic, spacious and cool with ceiling fans; covered verandas link them to a dining room, bar and lounge. The food is proper country cooking — venison, duck and fresh barramundi regulars on the menu. And being a dedicated fly week, the evenings are built for it: we'll have fly-tying gear set up at the lodge — tie a few after dinner, swap ideas and refill the box for the morning. Bring your own vice if you'd rather. Bar's open, yarns are free.

Bensbach is the best barramundi fishing on the planet by a country mile — and in 2027 we're fishing it on fly for the first time. As far as anyone knows, there's never been a dedicated fly week in the lodge's history. This is it. Most barra charters would kill for 10 fish over a metre in a year; Bensbach guests routinely beat that in a week — 2023 averaged 20 "metries" a week, one group landing 46. Now put that on a fly rod, and you're writing the fly chapter of fishing history. Between the surface eats, the endless floodplains and the wildlife, it's as good with a camera as it is with a fly rod.
The fly fishing. Bring 9- to 12-weight rods depending on what you're throwing. Big beastie flies, NYAP poppers and proven streamer patterns all earn their keep. Snakehead are the main baitfish here — and the reason these barra grow so big. It's not sight casting; it's putting the fly into the spots we know hold fish, and onto fleeing snakehead schools as the big barra crash through them. When a metre-plus eats off the top, you'll understand the fuss. We fish catch-and-release, bar the odd one kept for the table and shared with our local guides, who still live off the land and the river.
Safe Journey.
Fly out of Cairns, clear a quick customs stop at Daru, and you can be on the river by the afternoon. Over 500km from the nearest city, you're immersed in genuine wilderness — birds, game and big fish — while the lodge staff and guides keep you fed, watered and fishing. Most anglers leave with lifelong mates and memories to match. The team includes an Aussie, Deano, in an Overseer role keeping the show on the road. You're in good hands — just keep casting.
