Fishing Tips

Although the fishing can be good for 10 months of the year the months of April/May and October/November are more suitable for climate conditions.

The African Angler - Egypt

In the 1960’s a dam was built on the Nile at Aswan, the resulting Lake Nasser has flooded over 2,600 square kilometres of the Nile Valley; creating one of the largest man made lakes in Africa. The fish population of the original river was presented with a huge lake to live in and have since thrived in their new habitat, especially the Tilapia and their predators, Nile Perch, Tiger Fish and the big Catfish.

For the Australian fishing enthusiasts, Nile Perch is just like a huge Barramundi. The biggest caught on the lake went a whopping 275Ib’s.

We are often asked, “What can I expect to catch on a safari?” Fishing being fishing, who knows for sure? Most anglers can expect to capture at least one Nile perch of 50Ib plus. Beyond that, anything's possible - perhaps even another world record?

The best time of year to come on safari is a matter of personal choice.

If you are looking for exceptional all-round sport, with plenty of fish from 20Ib up, then the time to come is between March and August. These months are also the best for shore fishing, which can be awesomely exciting.

The winter months from October to January are the “big fish” months. At this time of the year the lake is at its highest level and the bigger Nile perch starting to congregate prior to spawning in February. The groups of bigger fish are easier to target by trolling but, because of the high water levels, they are in deeper water and difficult to reach from the shore.

Aside from terrific angling, the lake is a lovely place to visit where the weather is nearly always sunny and bright. The shoreline is a variety of desert landscapes, hilly and rugged, or flat and sandy with clean freshwater beaches. It’s magical wilderness of stunning desert scenery bordered by the clean water of the lake, which is dotted with rocky islands. There is an atmosphere of tranquillity, vastness and adventure a wilderness where anglers literally have hundreds of square kilometres to themselves.

The lake is remote and thinly populated by transient peasant fisherman. The residents are Bedouin camel and sheep herdsmen who can be seen grazing their flocks on the sparse vegetation at the edge of the lake.
Services & Facilities

The African angler has been operating safaris on Lake Nasser for the past nine years and has had the privilege of being the first to explore this remote and spectacular angling venue for a variety of sport fish, the massive Nile perch, the Tiger fish and the giant Vundu catfish. The style of safari is comfortable, the food is first-class and our Nubian staff are very experienced and are excellent hosts. We seem to have the right formula as most of our business comes from recommendation.

Our safari staff, who look after the supply boat (mother-ship) are well experienced to make sure you have a comfortable safari and that you eat well after a hard day fishing. With approximately one member of staff to each angler all you need to do is relax and have a fantastic safari - or fish until you drop!

The fishing boats are built by the The African Angler in Aswan and are specially designed for fishing safaris on Lake Nasser. Built for tough work in remote areas, each boat is fitted with long-range fuel tanks and plenty of storage area for your equipment.

Fishing Platform. The bow deck is flat, providing a forward casting area and there is an all round deck in case a quick manoeuvre is needed when that big fish takes a dive under the boat. The stern is a spacious trolling and casting area; each boat is fitted with a fish-finder and weighing scales up to 220Ib.

Accommodation.

Each boat has comfortable on board sleeping facilities with two bunks - each with full-size single mattress. This area also provides spacious daytime seating. At night the cabin can be enclosed by canvas, providing a cozy sheltered sleeping area. Each boat cabin has a 12v lighting system.
