Matava Gamefishing & Dive Resort - Fiji

Welcome to Matava on the remote Island of Kadavu(45 min flight from Nadi), Fiji.
The Resort boasts secluded splendour whilst also satisfying your spirit of adventures.

Traditional thatched Fijian bures nestled in the rainforest and set amidst lush tropical surroundings....offers privacy, comfort, superb ocean views with very good gamefishing.

Matava's is Fiji's premier Eco Adventure Resort and is proud to be star rated by the AAA STAR Rating Scheme at 3.5 stars.

Kadavu is situated 100km south of the main Island of Viti Levu and is one of the few remaining undeveloped islands in Fiji today.
Having maintained its strong cultural values, the population leads fairly subsistent lifestyles in sleepy coastal villages dwarfed by mountainous jungles and waterfalls plummeting from the hilltops. The island's deeply indented bays, fringed by coral reefs and mangrove forest provide habitat to a host of birds including the endemic Kadavu Musk parrot.
The striking Astrolabe Reef and the Kadavu group of Islands both have been created by past volcanic activity and techonic movements. The Matava Resort is right on the doorstep of this magnificent living organism, home to an abundance of marine life unequalled in Fiji.

Getting to Matava - Pacific Sun Airlines serves the Island of Kadavu with daily flights from Nadi and Suva. There is also a ferry service from Suva. Upon arrival you will be picked up by one of the Resort's boats.

Gameboat - "Bite Me" is a 31 foot DeepVee Blackwatch. It has a crew of two and can handle up to 4 guests at a time. Powered by twin Iveco 280's it is fitted out with toilet, shower, gallery and saloon for guest's comfort whilst big game fishing in the area's uninhabited islands and sheltered coral lagoons. This vessel is perfect for this area. "Bite Me" is in full Fiji survey and carries a plethora of electronics and safety eqyuipment.
Many Fiji National Fishing Records have been caught on "Bite Me".

Tackle - Penn International 30, 50 and 80lb game trolling outfits for those seeking chair or standup to fight billfish. There is also 8 & 10kg Shimano gear for those light tackle enthusiasts.
In addition, there are casting rods for the popper crunching GT's as well as deep water jigging outfits to find those deeper reef dwellers such as Dogtooth Tuna, Coral Trout and Black Trevally.

The Fishing

Marlin(3 species), Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin & Dogtooth Tuna, Mahi Mahi and Giant Trevelly are some of the main species common to the area.
Superb blue water game fishing awaits you around the Great Astrolabe barrier reef, oceanic pinnacles, 4,000m deep trenches and nearby sea mounts. Bite Me can be trolling in 1,000 metres of water within 10 minutes from the Resort for big Pacific Blue Marlin or working light tackle along the outer fringes of the barrier reef for Sailfish and Kadavu's famous monster Wahoo.

A specialty is light tackle Switch & Bait fishing for Pacific Sailfish. The Resort is more than happy to teach this exciting form of fishing for first timers.

Fishing Weather

Kadavu has a typical tropical climate with the winter months being May to September and the summer being October to April.
Summer time is usually characterised by calm settled weather. Its calm, hot and humid which is great for spotting birds working Tuna or finding current or weed lines for Mahi Mahi, Tuna and Billfish. The highest water temperature is about 30 degrees and the hottest month is usually March with the first cooling from the tropical heat starting mid April.
Bite Me usually concentrates on the offshore heavy tackle fishing in summer months though the popper casting for GT's in the barrier reef breakers is also excellent.
In winter time, Fiji experiences the SE trade winds. These trades vary in strength from a light breeze to a 20kt blow and usually lasts about 5-6 days followed by a couple of days of light northerly winds before the next trade starts. A strong trade wind can limit the game boat to fishing inside the barrier reef or fishing the lee side of the island and barrier reef. The air temperature generally reaches a low of about 20 degrees in August/September with the lowest water temperature being about 24 degrees. Winter is the BIG Wahoo and Sailfish light tackle season.
