Best kept secret for fly fisherman!
Permit and Golden Trevally have been caught on a regular basis when guided by Steve!
Tropical northern Australia is one of the most exciting fishing destinations around the globe. Midway along the North Queensland coast between Cairns and Townsville is the Hinchinbrook Channel System where most of the guided saltwater fishing is at its best.
Steve Jeston is the guide that runs Hyperspace Sportfishing Tours and as a resident of Townsville all his life, he has a wealth of knowledge of the North Queensland area.
Hinchinbrook Channel is a thirty mile long expanse of protected estuarine waterways and is the home to over twenty-five species of tropical sportfish. Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark Bream, Threadfin, Salmon, Queenfish and Trevally being the more common species.
For the sport fishing and fly fishing specialists, the news that Permit have now been found in large numbers in the channel system should get a few hearts pounding.
These dynamic fighters are sought worldwide without a lot of success and even though extremely hard to hook, Steve and a number of clients have already been able to join the elite club to claim a capture.
Because of large, relatively permanent numbers of these fish and Steve persistence, this area will undoubtable become Australia’s number one destination for Permit. As a by catch, plenty of Golden Trevally can be caught in this area.
Services & Facilities
If you were fishing the Hinchinbrook Channel you would be reminded of Hawaii. Rugged, mountainous terrain covered in tropical rainforest provides a spectacular backdrop while doing battle with some of Australia’s tropical bruisers.
Fishing in these areas is conducted from 16 foot “Super Punts”. These custom built vessels are purpose built with the angler's maximum fish ability in mind. Comfortably accommodating 2 anglers and a guide in each vessel, we can handle a maximum a 4 anglers at any one time.
Tackle is supplied on all charters including custom built rods and good quality bait casting and spinning reel. Fly fisher persons are recommended to bring their own 8 to 10 weight outfits.
Accommodation is at the Mudbrick Manor in the Hinchinbrook area. This 4 star bed & breakfast accomodation is run by a couple who are completely at home hosting fishing and non fishing persons alike. Meals are excellent and are included in the packages.
The Hinchinbrook Channel is formed by Hinchinbrook Island (lying just 2 miles off the coast) and the mainland. It is 30 miles long and has over 100 rivers entering the system in this distance.
In all, superb scenery and good fishing, in a tropical environment. Competent guides and nearby accommodation makes for an excellent fishing safari to Northern Australia.
